Olimpo

[En español]

Contemporary Colombian-born painter, Olimpo attended the School of Artistic Education and National University in his native country. He continued with his masters and doctoral studies at Florida International University.

Olimpo has also studied Art Anthropology with the masters, Guillermo Rendón and Anielka Gelemur, at the Institute Bókkota of High Studies where he learned about the Andean-Amazon’s artistic realms. Here Olimpo did extensive research absorbing and assimilating the spirit of traditional indigenous cultures. He was both moved and fascinated by the mythical and organic approach to art. This expression captures the powerful essence of two-dimensional, symmetric-asymmetric, and anti-gravitational pattern. Using variants of traditional color theory and composition, Olimpo creates works abundant with pigments and light.

As Head of the National Artistic Area and Cultural Promotion for the Colombian government, he organized Popular Art Workshops for at risk youth. The programs were especially tailored to create works of profound socio-cultural projection by youth.

Olimpo has lived in Miami, Florida since 1985 where he has been an active critic and lecturer. He has taught at Florida International University, Miami-Dade Community College and University of Miami where he has been nominated several times “Teacher of the Year”.
